Description

PORTLAND

SY6873 CHISWELL, Fortuneswell
969-1/3/199 (North side)
23/07/75 No.120

GV II

House at lower end of short row, adjoining No 145 High Street
(qv) on its higher (left-hand) side. Early C19, some parts
possibly earlier. Large squared coursed block, partly
rendered; slate or concrete slate roofs and stone ridge stack.
One-unit to left of 2-unit plan. Small 2-storey one-window
unit, formerly a store or warehouse, has 4-pane casement above
a plank door in stone-cheeked porch with concrete slab top.
3-storey unit to right has one-window front with 16-pane
sashes. This returns to a raised parapet front with C20
casement at each of three floors and deep-set door to left.
Rear is plain, with a lean-to. The building steps down the
steep incline at this point in High Street, and the return
front faces down into Chiswell, holding an important position
in the townscape.
