Wanganui Cottage

GV II

Small house in row. Possibly late C17 or early C18 origins,
but much modified in C19 and C20. Rough coursed rubble, raised
at eaves in two courses large squared stone, slate roof. Two
storeys and attic, 1-windowed. All C20 including dormer, and
C20 door to right. Ground floor window has blocking and former
jamb stone to what was probably a 3-light mullioned window
with a similar 2-light above. Interior retains large
rough-chamfered beam, and stop-chamfered ceiling joists.
Spiral wood staircase to left of deep fire recess, right, with
C20 detail. This dwelling probably formed part of a larger
late C16 house, now in several units, best represented by No
72 (qv) adjoining.
(Royal Commission on Historical Monuments: Dorset: London:
1970-: 257).
