Large detached house in town. c1810. Extended 1840s probably
by George Wightwick. Stucco on rubble with granite plinth and
mid-floor string course; dry slate hipped roofs with
projecting moulded eaves with dentils. Double-depth plan plus
service wing set back on the left.
2 storeys; N street front with symmetrical 3-window front on
its right. Original 16-pane hornless sashes; central
round-arched doorway; 6-panel door and petalled fanlight.
Principal 3-window east entrance front has doorway resited
from No.21 Meneage Street (qv) with fluted Doric columns and
frieze with triglyph door with margin panes; C20 window right
of doorway otherwise original 12-pane hornless sashes;
3-window garden front with original 1st-floor sashes and later
C19 canted bay on left. Large late C19 conservatory to ground
floor.
INTERIOR: fine quality early and mid C19 plasterwork and
carpentry details including moulded and carved bands with
trailing detail and egg and dart cornices in the 3 reception
rooms, the 2 right-hand rooms linked by opening with 2 pairs
of Corinthian columns; good chimneypiece to left-hand room;
1840s surround and hob gate (similar to one at Penhellis (qv))
to right-hand room by Wightwick; large oval stair hall with
open-well staircase with handrail scrolled over newel;
enriched oval guilloche ceiling band over stairs; moulded
ceiling bands to entrance hall and vestibule (the original
entrance hall), also a diagonally-set stone floor and panelled
doors and window shutters. Service wing has many old or
original fittings including a good quality dresser with fluted
pilasters and moulded cornice. The back stair has a turned
newel and stick balusters.
The setting of this house is an important part of its overall
rare well-preserved quality; it overlooks a large
well-landscaped garden right in the middle of Helston and
forms part of a group of outstanding buildings in Cross
Street, Church Street, Lady Street and Coinagehall Street.
