Kingston Wesleyan Methodist Church

Methodist Church. Dated 1913, by Runton & Barry of Hull. Mid
and late C20 alterations and additions. Brick with ashlar
dressings and hipped plain tile roof with 2 large coped side
wall stacks. C18 Domestic Revival style. Plinth, modillion
eaves cornice, coped balustrade with pedestals. 2 storeys,
with clerestorey to main block; 7x7 windows. Windows are
glazing bar sashes, those to the front with brick flat arches
and keystones.
Projecting centre under steep-pitched dentillated pediment,
has a 2-storey coved round-arched recess with imposts and
bracket keystone carrying an oval datestone with Baroque
surround. Round-arched central stair window and below, a pair
of panelled doors with plain corniced surround and above, a
panel, formerly inscribed. On the first floor, three 12-pane
windows on either side. Below, three 15-pane windows on either
side.
Returns have a projecting bay to left, with a glazing bar sash
above and a recessed double door below. Main block has on
either side six 12-pane sashes on each floor, and a string
course between floors. Right side has at the rear a late C20
single-storey porch.
INTERIOR has a segment-arched beamed ceiling to the main
space, with a panelled gallery on 3 sides, carried on wooden
brackets with square posts at the canted corners. At the
front, a full-width panelled screen and gallery, with
projecting central pulpit flanked by a rail with wooden
columns. On either side, a pair of half-glazed doors. At the
far end, a pair of doors on either side, with round glazed
lights. On either side, five 3-panel doors. On the gallery, a
pair of similar part-glazed doors at the rear, and on either
side, five 3-panel doors. At the front, a single door to left.
Above, six five-light wood mullioned windows on each side.
Transverse entrance lobby has moulded cornices and round
arches. At either end, a pair of half-glazed doors with
lattice overlights. Six 3-panel doors to meeting rooms. Front
stairwell has a Y-plan concrete staircase with landing,
wrought-iron balustrade and ramped handrail. Patterned
stained-glass stair window. Under the stairs, a pair of doors
with round glazed lights.
Fittings include panelled softwood benches with coped shaped
ends. The staircase, and some of the fittings, were resited
from Witham Methodist Church in the 1950s.
This building was originally intended as a Sunday School, and
became a church when the First World War prevented the church
being built.
