STREATLEY HIGH STREET (north side) SU 5980 10/13 Childe Court, The Maltings, The Morrell Room, And The Morrell Room Cottage GV II 3 houses and village hall, formerly Maltings. Late C17, C18 with additions and alterations in 1898 by W. Ravenscroft in a Domestic Revival style. Childe Court. Southern block, south front: grey brick headers with red dressings, gauged window heads, first floor wooden dentil eaves cornice to patterned tile-hung first floor, part to right jettied with shaped brackets. Wooden modillion eaves cornice to old tile roof with end stacks. Sprocketted eaves carried in front of 2 large tile hung gabled dormers to right with louvred openings, and around tile hung gable ends to left and right. 2 storeys and attic. 2 first floor 6-light diamond leaded mullioned and transomed windows to right, and diamond leaded cross window to left; 2 ground floor diamond leaded canted bays to right with dentil cornices and blind boxes, and diamond leaded cross window to left. One leaded casement on each floor in gable end to west. Entrance to rear. Northern block, west front: flint with brick dressings, first floor jettied timber frame with herringbone brick nogging. 2 tile hung gables each with louvred opening, and central stack in valley to rear. 2 storeys and attic. Large first floor 8-light leaded mullioned and transomed window to right, 3-light leaded casement to left flanked by 2 leaded casements. Ground floor leaded cross window off-centre to left with small leaded casement to right and half glazed door to left. The lialtinw, west front: flint with brick dressings and timber framed second floor with herringbone brick nogging. Wooden modillion eaves cornice to pyramidial tile roof with lead ball finial, hipped louvred dormer on each face, and large stack to rear. 2 leaded cross windows on first and second floors, and 3-light ground floor leaded casement. Morrell Room, west front: flint with brick dressings. Slate roof and central louvred cupola with dentil cornice, dome and finial with weathervane. One storey. Six 2-light leaded casements beneath eaves, 2 half glazed doors to right, and two C20 half glazed doors to left under third window from left. Morrell Room Lodge, west front: ground floor of flint with brick dressings and patterned tile-hung jettied first floor with moulded bressumer. Wooden modillion eaves cornice with sprocketted eaves carried in front of tile hung gable end with louvred opening, and large stack to right. First floor 4-light leaded casement, 2 small ground floor casements to left, and half glazed door with leaded overlight to right. B.O.E. (Berkshire), p. 230; The Builder, July 23, 1898.
