Ruins of Premonstratensian Abbey. Founded in 1182; moved to this site in 1363
and rebuilt after a fire in 1382. Evidence of C12 and C13 work. Remaining
walling is coursed flint, with some re-used brick and some flushwork, especially
to St Mary's Chapel (Lady Chapel). Church had nave, aisles, a square crossing,
transepts, a chancel and chancel aisles. St Mary's Chapel in the north chancel
aisle was formerly used as a granary; restores for worship in C20. To the south
of the church are extensive standing remains of the monastic ranges, including
the refectory, warming house, cloister, sacristies and vestries. The chapter
house stood to the east of the cloister. Remains of early C16 brick gatehouse
to west of cloister. Scheduled Ancient Monument (County No 27).
