Two houses, part now office. c1760. Brick with ashlar
dressings; hipped tile and slate roof with brick end stacks.
Georgian style.
3 storeys; almost symmetrical 5-window range. Ashlar plinth,
sill band to each floor, top cornice and stone-coped brick
parapet.
Central entrance has doorcase with panelled pilaster strips,
consoled entablature blocks and pediment, overlight to
6-fielded-panel door; entrance to left end has doorcase with
incised pilasters, frieze with rosettes and cornice, blind
overlight to 4-fielded-panel door; entrance to right end has
doorcase with panelled pilaster strips, frieze and pediment,
overlight to 6-fielded-panel door. Windows have rubbed brick
flat arches over 12-pane horned sashes, but 2nd floor windows
have 9-pane horned sashes; central windows have architraves.
C19 shop window to left of centre has consoled cornice and
3-light fixed glazing.
Right return has cornice and projecting stack; rear has 2
wings, one hipped 2-storey wing with end tripartite sash over
canted single-storey projection, return has narrow window with
pegged frame; higher gabled wing to right has large 1st floor
casement to return.
Plaque to front records the Stowe Gate, built for Bishop de
Clinton, which stood nearby from the early C12 until the late
C18.
