8/177 Gate pier in front of
Whirley Hall

GV II

Gate pier: late C17. Ashlar buff sandstone. Moulded plinth supports
a square body with 2 recessed panels on each face, with cabling as a
border, with a raised band between them. The upper panel to the front
has the arms of the Fitton family. Projecting, moulded capstone has a
mushroom finial with a gadrooned cap.

In Victorian times there were still a pair the missing one with the
arms of the Swettenham family.
