Workhouse, now hospital. 1836. By S. Kempthome. Painted brick with hipped slate roofs. Brick axial stacks. PLAN: Superintendent's house, boardroom and administration block at centre of the front; large T -plan accommodation range behind, with single storey ranges around courtyards in the angles at front and at the back; the north west wing has been truncated. EXTERIOR: 2-storey, 1:3:1 bay front block, the centre advanced with pediment, 12-pane sashes, central doorway with rectangular overlight and small hood on brackets. Flanking single-storey ranges around courtyards in the angles of the large 3-storey T-plan range behind, complete with sashes with glazing bars. Single-storey wings at the rear are not of special interest.
