4/167 Peculiar People's Chapel
II
Chapel. Dated 1877. Red brick, gault brick dressings. Grey slate roof. A
small simple chapel as required by this religious sect, single storeyed, the
lugged quoins, 2 Gothic windows and central doors with gault header and
stretcher decoration. Gault band to gable coping. The windows with glazing
bars and centre mullions forming Gothic heads. Double vertically boarded doors
with ornamental strap hinges and escutcheon plate and handle. Matching windows
to returns with pilasters between. This is the first chapel built by the
Peculiar People. This and Tillingham are the only known chapels to survive
intact architecturally. The sect was founded as a grass roots revivalist
movement during the 1850's; they were respected for agricultural and social
reforms but belief only in natural healing was a cause of friction when
Smallpox vaccination etc., became popular. Mark Sorrell, The Peculiar People.
