Board school on Bramford Road, now record office and theatre.
1882. By Brightwen Binyon. Gatacre Road extension 1888 by E
Fernley Bissopp. Red brick with terracotta details;
machine-tiled roofs.
One storey. Bramford Road block has a 5-window range
comprising 3 3-light casements and a 2-light casement at each
end. Gabled roof with central leaded fleche. Flanking this to
right and left is a high gable-end of the east and west
returns. Gable ends fitted with 4-light transomed windows with
4/1 sashes. Punched arcaded decoration in bands right, left
and below. Terracotta band in gable with the legends: Ipswich
School Board (left gable); Bramford Road School (right gable).
Punched roundels in gable heads and further chequered
decoration. Gabled roofs.
Gatacre Road return (east return) has a central arched doorway
with 2 groups of sashes either side. Gatacre Road extension of
1888 has one storey, stepped buttresses and 3 stepped gables
disguised as through-eaves dormers. A further 2 stepped
gable-dormers to the south in a secondary block.
INTERIOR: Bramford Road main block has a roof of false
hammerbeam trusses. Gatacre Road hall has a roof of arched
timber trusses with pierced spandrels.
