Description

FORRABURY AND
SX 19 SW MINSTER

2/106 Lychgate to west of Church of
St Merteriana
II
GV
Lychgate. Circa 1870, probably dating from the restoration of the Church (qv Church
of St Merteriana Minster) by J P St Aubyn. Slate-stone rubble with reused granite
dressings.
The unroofed lychgate forms the south west entrance to the churchyard. The 2 side
walls are gabled with reused granite coping; a carved spandrel probably reused from
the church (compare with reset stone in west tower) has been reset in the left hand
wall and a reused granite cap at the apex on the right hand wall. The entrance is
divided in the centre by a slate-rubble pier with a flat top forming a coffin rest.
Granite cattle grid and central slate-slab forms stile between central coffin rest
and right hand wall. Timber gate between coffin rest and left hand wall.
