Description

HELMINGHAM -
TM15NE
4/10010 Estate Cottages,
nos 97 and 98

GV II

Pair of estate cottages, c1840, perhaps to the designs of Anthony Salvin,
who was active at Helmingham Hall (qv) in c1841. Brick in Flemish bond with
moulded brick stack to party wall. Pantile roofs with ornamental vergeboards
to facing gable and dormer, and slightly swept eaves. Two storeys with
outshut to rear; left unit with facing gable wing slightly projecting and the
right with a simple half dormer. Flat-arched windows; four-centred, arched
entrances with doors of an authentic design. Picturesque style combining
vernacular forms with those of the 'cottage orne' tradition. Cottages 98-110,
spanning boundary between Framsden and Helmingham, form a group.
