An early C19 water pump.
MATERIALS:
The pump stands just over 2m tall, has a wrought iron cow tail handle and lead spout and is enclosed within wooden casing.
HISTORY:
Pumps appeared in towns and villages in increasing numbers throughout the C18 and C19 although many pumps were closed during the C19 on sanitary grounds once it was realised that cholera was a water-borne disease. The water pump on Church Row, Framsden dates to c.1840 when it supplied water to the row of cottages opposite.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION:
The water pump on the north side of the B1077 in Framsden is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: it was constructed to serve the row of estate cottages opposite and forms an important component in the village landscape and wider social history.
* Intactness: Although the timber casing is likely to have been renewed, the pump survives intact.
* Group value: it holds group value with the row of estate cottages opposite (designated at Grade II) for which it was constructed to serve.
The water pump on the north side of the B1077 in Framsden, installed in 1840, is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
