Set in the south wall of the tower second stage is an 11th Century tympanum showing the Adoration of the Cross, with inscription -Gauterus et uxor eius Cecilina fecerunt facere ecclesiam istam in onore ori uti et sce Mariae Virginis et omnium scorum Dei simul-. My translation: Gauterus (Gunther) and his wife Cecilina (Selina) caused this church to be built in order to honour the Word of God, to Saint Mary the Virgin and, at the same time, All God's Saints-. In addition to its apparent meaning, I take this to be a prayer subtly recommending Gauterus and Cecilina to the grace of God, and automatically prayed by anyone who reads it out. The Latin here seems, to me, to have a poetic cadence, of which the abbreviations are part. The positioning of the words appears significant, with the donors names first, followed by power verbs. The mention of God is reserved to the key place: in Latin, the end of the sentence. (Photo Jun 2014).
