06-JUN-01 Gatepiers and walls to east of The Lodge

GV II

Gatepiers and walls. They form the entrance and boundary to The Lodge, No.304 Woodstock Road from Middle Way and boundary to its walled garden. c.1830, c.1862 and mid C19.
Gatepiers are rendered and whitewashed with moulded square stone caps. South pair is of c.1830 and has reveals for narrow carriage gates and neckings to front. North pair, added c.1862, allows for grander access and has rendered wall between with break for tradesman's entrance.
Wall adjacent to The Lodge is of red brick part rebuilt where formerly attached to the house. Wall to south is faced in coursed rubblestone to the road but has inner face of brick laid on edge as if in rat-trap bond. Rounded coping tiles. c.2 metres high , with C20 buttresses added to inside of garden wall.
The piers and walls form a group with The Lodge, which stands close to Middle Way.
