The Blitz Grave 200m east of
Crematorium at City Road Cemetery

Mass grave of air raid victims. c1941. Coursed squared stone
with ashlar dressings. Low wall with slab coping, backed by a
hedge, surrounding a kidney-shaped enclosure. At the entrance,
a pair of square stone piers with flat caps and ramped coped
flanking walls with inscribed tablets. Inside, a curved path
flanked by low walls with slab coping, leading to an octagonal
enclosure surrounded by a similar wall. This has a granite
band inscribed with the victims' names.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the grave contains the bodies of 134 citizens
killed in air raids on 12 and 15 Dec. 1940.
