Description

TQ 54 SW BIDBOROUGH PENSHURST ROAD (south side)

3/26 Stable block at Swaylands
School

GV II

Stable block, converted to housing. Circa 1880s, contemporary with the lodge
(q.v.). Local sandstone, brought to course; concrete tile roof; stacks with
brick shafts. Tudor style.

Plan: 3 and a half ranges round a courtyard, the east range probably used for
grooms' or servants' accommodation.

Exterior: Single-storye and attic. The style matches the lodge with coped
gables and gabled dormers with copings and kneelers. Asymmetrical 9-window
east front with gables to left and right and 2 gabled dormers with 4 attic
dormers with flat tops. C20 porch to right of centre with a hipped roof.
Various one-, 2- and 3-light casements, mostly with their original glazing
with small panes, some with replaced glazing. Clock on ridge, probably with a
missing cupola. Chimney-shaft is right of centre with clustered shafts with a
batter and corbelled brick coping. The elevations facing the courtyard
continue in the same style with gabled and attic dormers and small-pane
windows. The 4-bay north range has a chamfered Tudor arched doorway to the
right (west). Similar doorway in the 5-bay west range. The south range is
shorter with an entrance to the yard on the south side.

Interior: Not inspected.

Group value with Swaylands School, separately listed in Penshurst parish.
