Description

LEWANNICK
SX 27 NW
3/36 Upton Barton
GV II
Farmhouse. Probably mid C17. Stone rubble, slate hung with rag slates on front
elevation. Slate roof with hipped ends. Brick shaft to end stack on right, slate
hung shaft to end stack on left and to rear lateral stack.
Plan: Front range of 3-room and cross passage plan with stair projection to rear of
passage. The hall is unheated by a rear lateral stack, the large inner room by an
end stack and the lower room also by an end stack. There are two one-room plan
heated wings, which are used as dairies, to rear of the lower end and inner room.
There is a C19 outshut across the rear, between these two wings.
Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front. The house is built down a
slope with the ground rising to left. The entrance is to left of centre with a C19
door. Circa late C19 or early C20 windows. 8-pane sash to left and two similar
sashes to right. First floor with three 8-pane sashes and a 6-pane sash above the
entrance. There is a small lean-to outshut on the left hand side and a C19 porch
which enters directly into the large inner room on right.
Interior: Only partially inspected. The larger inner room has a fireplace which is
blocked and is heated by a Rayburn stove. The hall has a C20 grate and plastered
ceilings. A full interior inspection may reveal several interesting features. There
are the remains of dressed granite including several mullions in the front garden,
possibly removed from Upton Farmhouse when it was partially remodelled in the C19.
Site of Manor House. The remains of Upton Castle to the south are scheduled as an
Ancient Monument.
