Description

TQ 64 SE BRENCHLEY GEDGES HILL (east side)

6/85 Barn about 40m south west
of Maynards

GV II

Barn, originally associated with Maynards (q.v.) but now in separate
ownership. Probably C18 with circa 1930s renovations. Framed construction on
sandstone footings the infill cement render; peg-tile roof.

Plan: 5-bay south facing barn, sited at right angles to Maynards and end on
to the road. Opposed threshing doors in the centre, outshuts to either side
of the south porch.

Exterior: The external framing survives to the ground. Limewashed
weatherboarding on the south wall, visible in the outshut, indicates that the
exterior was originally weatherboarded. The infill to the exposed framing may
date from the 1930s when the barn was extensively renovated. Roof half-hipped
at ends. Rear doorway blocked. The front (south) elevation has a gabled
projecting porch with full-height timber doors flanked by outshuts with
catslide roof.

Interior: The wall framing has posts with formed jowls. Tie beam, queen
strut and clasped purlin trusses flank the threshing floor. The 2 outer
trusses have diagonal braces below a collar.

Group value with Maynards.
