Description

TQ 64 SE BRENCHLEY MAIDSTONE ROAD, MATFIELD
(east side)
6/145 Thorn Cottages

GV II

Row of 4 cottages. Late C18/early C19. Ground floor brick; first floor tile-
hung; C20 concrete tile roof, replacing slate.

Plan: The range faces approximately north. 4 probably 2-cell symmetrically-
arranged cottages, the principal rooms heated by back-to-back fireplaces in
axial stacks. Some C20 single-storey rear additions.

Exterior: 2 storeys. Roof hipped at ends. Each cottage has a C19 panelled
front door, the range has 4 ground floor and 4 first floor 16-pane circa early
C19 sash windows; casement windows to the rear. Pained front doors in the
centre, doors to extreme left and right.

Interior: Not inspected.

Although the concrete tile roof is an unfortunate alteration, purpose built
cottage rows of this date with doors and windows intact are rare.
