A gateway, incorporating a lodge. c1840. Stucco. A classical design, with
a tall arch flanked by plain wide pilasters, having simple mouldings to
cornice and architrave, and a deep frieze containing a stone panel; at the
top is a pediment filled with an armorial relief. The bold impost moulding
continues at each side as the cornice to flanking single-storeyed pavilions
(the lodge) which end in pilasters, each with a central window (blocked on
the north elevation). Within the arch, there is a niche above a doorway. A
small service wing, with a slate roof, extends at the west side. There are
ornamental wrought iron gates. The panel on the road front (facing north)
is inscribed "This Road from Wimborne to Dorchester was projected and
completed through the instrumentality of J S W SAWBRIDGE ERLE DRAX Esq MP in
the Years 1811 and 1812". The panel on the south side has a worn
inscription, referring to the closure of the road by order of the
Magistrates in 1811. RCHM
