House, formerly gate lodge; 1881-2 by George Devey. Red brick with diaper patterning in dark
brick; some painted brickwork, and roughcast to gables. Plain tile roofs. Polygonal tower, now
truncated of its machicolations and painted, with gateway attached to right, main range with gabled
crosswing, curving curtain wall continuing to left to become garden wall. Two storeys. Arch to
right four-centred, with chamfered brickwork and moulded parapet. Next to it, a replaced plank
and muntin door with glazed panel beneath four-centred arch and brick hoodmould. Small 9-pane
leaded window to left. Similar window to adjacent face. On angle, square paned leaded window
with top-hung light. Left hand rice has ground floor leaded window. Return to main roof is tile
hung. 2-storey range in brick has diaper patterning. Two ground-floor leaded 3-light casements
with sqaure leaded panes beneath segmental arches. Similar dormer casement above, with flat roof
Buttress forms base of tall stack. To left, pebbledash rendered gabled upper storey supported on
chamfered timber bracket, and with moulded fascia, dentilled barge-boards and 3-light leaded
casement. Stack rises as prominent feature at angle of gable and main range. Three attached sharts,
with moulded brick neding and bands. Tall pots. To left, curving curtain wall with dentilled brick
cornice to parapet, partly swept drops to lower level to form garden wall. Diaper brickwork except
where repaired. Higher section has two-light window beneath segmental arch and masks hipped
roof of range to rear.
Warren Close and Gable Cottage (q.v.) stand either side of the former entrance to Coombe
Warren, built in 1870 for Bertram Wodehouse Currie MP and demolished in 1926. They form
a particularly picturesque group, and are included as charming examples ofDevey's consumate skill
in designing estate cottages.
