Elementary school, now club. 1894. By JB Mitchell-Withers. For
the Sheffield School Board. Ashlar. Roof not visible. Stripped
Classical style.
EXTERIOR: rusticated plinth, first floor and main cornices,
the latter with blocking course. Rusticated pilasters to
ground floor, paired Ionic pilasters to the first floor. 2
storeys; 2 x 3 bays. Entrance front, to Holly street, has
projecting entrance block to right with a pilastered and
pedimented single bell turret with balustrade. First floor has
2 superimposed small square windows on each floor. To left,
plain square headed doorway with panelled double door and
overlight. Left return has an 8 pane sash above and a larger 8
pane sash below. Outside, a wrought-iron railing with central
panelled square ashlar piers and corniced caps, flanking a
bridge with wrought-iron balustrade.
West Street front has in the centre 2 paired 8-pane sashes
framed by double pilasters and flanked by single blank bays.
Below, similar fenestration. Basement has 6 square headed
openings with railings. Right return has on each floor a
paired window flanked by single windows, all 8 pane sashes.
The upper paired window has a scroll pediment. Left return has
similar fenestration. To left, a projecting block, 2 windows,
with small superimposed sashes and to right, steps to a plain
doorway with small cornice.
INTERIOR not inspected.
This building is part of a group illustrating the development
of the City's educational facilities on a single site.
