Former St Joseph's School

Roman Catholic school, now architects' offices. Dated 1889,
converted and restored 1990. Coursed squared stone with ashlar
dressings and steep pitched plain tile roofs with 2 large
gable and 2 side wall stacks, all coped, and 2 gabled louvred
ventilators. Renaissance Revival style. H-plan.
EXTERIOR: ground floor sillband, coped gables. Single storey
plus basement; 6 window range. Windows are mainly stone
mullioned cross casements with glazing bars. Central bay has
broken segmental pediment with pedimented dormer containing a
niche and figure. Below, porch with shouldered coped gable and
chamfered stone doorcase with cornice on brackets, and
panelled double door. Above the door, a dated panel. Outside,
steps with ramped coped balustrade walls. In each return, a
small window. Beyond, on each side, a 2-light window. Side
bays have a large through-eaves dormer with a 4-light window.
Under the right window, a 2-light basement window.
Wings have shouldered round topped gables containing an oval
glazing bar window with hoodmould. Below, a 4-light window
with cornice on brackets. Right wing has a smaller 4-light
window to the basement.
Left return has four 2-light casements.
INTERIOR has central hall with plaster groin vault, divided by
original glazed wooden screens.
