Grotto. C18. Dry stone rubble with some blocks and some ironstone. Built into
earthern bank and covered with soil. Central arched entrance with flanking panels
to sides, once shell decorated. Segmental top to front with heart-shaped panel.
Interior:- Shell lined, vaulted chamber. Initialled "H.H.E." and with date of 1810.
Rectangular trough to end. One of a series garden ornaments in a Romantic
Landscape created by Philip Cartaret Webb in c.1750-1770. Noted in the Register of
Historic Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England - Part 40 (Surrey)
