Brass of Ralph Babyngton, d.1521, in his Rectors robes. The left hand shield is Babyington, —argent, ten torteaux, four, three, two, one, gules; a label of three points, azure— for himself. The right hand shield is Babyngton impaled (side by side) with Fitzherbert, —argent, a chief, countervair, over all a bend, sable-, for his father Thomas and mother Editha. They lived at Dethyck, and used the parish church at Ashover in Derbyshire. The curling text above Ralph's head -I will take up the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord-. The large Latin inscription is upside down, so you avoid standing on him to read it. (Photo Jun 2007).
