Description

HERTFORD

TL3212NW NORTH ROAD
817-1/16/126 (North side)
Footbridge over mill stream, in
grounds 40m north of North Road
House

II

Footbridge. 1848 (date on central escutcheon on arch).
Architect Thomas Smith. Cast-iron with gault brick and stucco
abutments. Segmentally arched girders with trellis-pattern
spandrels, with bamboo-form lattice pattern handrails.
Abutments have piers with caps and ramped downswept connectors
to join handrails.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Thomas Smith acquired additional land in the
mid 1840s to embellish the setting of his house by landscaping
the island between the mill stream and River Beane, and the
north side, after the picturesque manner of JC Loudun. The
folly, north of the river, now in the grounds of Beane River
View, Port Vale and the gazebo now in the grounds of Rockall,
Rockleigh (qqv) were built as part of the garden architecture.
