GV II

Public house. Late C16, reconstructed in brick mid C19,
altered mid C20. Timber-framed, encased in plastered and
colourwashed brick; hipped slate roof with stack on both
slopes and a third internal end stack to north.
EXTERIOR: Victoria Road front: 2 storeys, 5 windows,
irregularly disposed. Central plank door flanked by a renewed
3-light leaded casement on either side: at left end a canted
bay with similar casements. On the first floor are three
further casements of same type. Right end of ground floor has
a C20 Tudor-style public house front of three segment arched
windows which returns to Market Cross Place with three further
windows. On corner between is a double-leaf glazed door. First
floor has false timber studwork fitted with one single-light
and one 3-light mullioned C20 window to Victoria Road front.
Front to Market Cross Place has further doorway with 4-light
mullioned window to right immediately below first-floor canted
bay window. To the left is one 3-light mullioned window. All
are C20.
INTERIOR: south-west room with chamfered bridging beam. North
wall of this room with late C16 studwork remaining. First
floor not inspected.
