Shops with offices above. 1895. By Gilbert Smith Doughty of
Nottingham for Smart & Brown, furnishers. Red brick, with
ashlar dressings, and slate roofs with coped gables. Jacobean
Revival Style.
Lintel and sill bands, upper floors divided by pilasters. 5
storeys plus attics; 6 window range.
Ground floor has 2 late C20 shopfronts and to right, a
round-arched doorway in a polished granite facing. Above, 6
showroom windows, 2 lights, with segmental heads. Over the
windows, a strapwork frieze. The 3 upper floors are divided
into 2 identical sections of 3 windows. Each has a central
cross casement, 3 lights, flanked by similar windows, 2
lights. Fourth floor windows in the same arrangement, with
moulded segmental heads and ashlar keystones. Above them, an
ashlar entablature, then a similar arrangement of windows with
glazing bar toplights. Above again, 2 very tall, ornate
gables, with pairs of finials between. Each gable has a large
round window with terracotta surround and keystones. Gables
are topped by curved ashlar gables with pediments and finials.
