Former malthouse and brewery, subsequently light industrial.
Mid C19. Yellow stock bricks, red brick dressings, timber clad
projection, bitumen covered clay tile mansard roof with curved
eaves, pyramid roof and cowl to malthouse, brick stack left
gable end. Plan: malthouse with adjoining range contain cross
gable with projecting bay. 2 storeys plus attic, 1:2 bays,
right pyramid roof of malthouse lit on right return by 5-light
window, left projecting gable end with 3-light window, fretted
ends to timber cladding carried on struts set in concrete
corbels, 2 single light windows below, 2 windows set apart to
right; ground floor right large segmental-headed fixed light
window, left double door, panelled and half-glazed,
rectangular fanlight with glazing bars. Left return lit only
at ground floor level by 2 small windows. The projection was
for dropping the malted barley into carts below. This
malthouse is believed to be part of the brewery that predated
the large building now known as Le Carbone, South Street (not
included). The malt tax was repealed in 1880, possibly
stimulating the construction of larger premises.
