Description

BLACKMORE

TL60SW SPRIGG'S LANE
723-1/2/44 (West side)
New Farmhouse

GV II

House. Late C16 and C17. Timber-framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. Late C16 main range of 4 bays facing
approximately SE, with external stack at right end. C17 2-bay
range to rear left, with axial stack at the junction, and
external stack at end, now enclosed by single-storey lean-to
extension. 2 storeys. All windows are C20 casements. C20 door.
INTERIOR: the main range has jowled posts, other wall framing
plastered, and chamfered binding beams. The binding beam
between the 2 left bays has a step stop on one side, a similar
stop with the corners cut back on the other side, an unusual
combination suggesting a date of c1560. The binding beam
between the 2 right bays has been reinforced with a grown
knee, not original. Joists plastered to the soffits. Clasped
purlin roof with arched wind bracing.
The rear range has unjowled posts, chamfered beams with runout
stops, plain joists of square and vertical sections, and a
clasped purlin roof without wind bracing. This rear wing
appears to be on the site of a former medieval hall range, and
incorporates much reused timber from the earlier building,
including a cambered tie-beam, a wallplate rebated for the
shutters of an unglazed window (but now crossing a post), and
smoke-blackened rafters with oblique trenches for former
collars. The axial beam of the rear bay is bolted to the
soffit of the binding beam, indicating an early alteration.
C20 grates.
