3/38 The Old Vicarage

Former vicarage. Late C18 - early C19, probably with C17 origins to central
range; later C19 alterations and rear extension to right wing. Red brick in
Flemish bond. Pantile roof. U-shaped on plan: single-room central range
with entrance hall to left and passage to rear, flanked by wings 2 rooms
deep with outshuts to rear courtyard. 2 storeys, 5 bays: slightly recessed
3-bay central range incorporating entrance on left and full-height canted
bay on right, flanked by taller 2-storey single-bay gabled cross-wings 4
bays deep. C20 door and pilastered doorcase with 12-pane sash to right in
flush wooden architrave beneath segmental header arch, and full-height
canted brick bay with 16-pane sashes. 12-pane sash in reveal to left wing
with sill and flat wedge lintel; similar window to right wing beneath
channelled and keyed flat wedge lintels. First floor: central range has 2
unequal 9-pane flush sashes beneath segmental header arches; 12-pane flush
sashes to wings beneath channelled and keyed flat wedge lintels. Wings have
blind lunettes to gables with header arches and projecting sills, that to
right with painted sundial and gnomon, that to left with brass bell
suspended from timber bracket; wrought-iron tie-bar ends. Brick eaves
cornice to centre (details obscured by creeper), stone-coped gables with
shaped kneelers to wings; returns of wings have stepped and cogged brick
eaves cornice. Axial stack to junction of central range and right wing,
axial stack to left wing, end stacks to rear of wings. Right return: full-
length 18-pane ground-floor sashes and 12-pane first-floor sashes beneath
channelled and keyed cambered wedge lintels, windows to earlier section to
left in flush wood architraves, those to right slightly recessed. Left
return: recessed 6-fielded-panel door with 4-pane overlight beneath
segmental arch flanked by tripartite sashes in reveals with wood mullions
and glazing bars beneath cambered arches; three 12-pane first-floor sashes.
Interior. Centre-right room has C17 3-fielded-panel door and plain stone
chimneypiece with C19 fluted surround and landscape painting in overmantel,
and fluted pilasters flanking bay window and door; overdoor with central oil
painting flanked by carved panels with inscription and arms in relief,
perhaps re-set; moulded cornice. Ground floor front right contains
dentilled cornice, beaded-panel window shutters and door in architrave;
cornice, panelled window shutters and door to rear right.
