Almshouses. 1840. Built by local Gibson family to expand
accommodation in existing central block (qv). Yellow/pink
brick, slate roof. Rectangular plan. 2 storeys. W front
elevation: 6 window range, windows have chamfered brick
reveals and cast splayed sills and moulded labels, paired
lights, wooden frames with hollow chamfers, horizontal sliding
sashes, in all 4x4 panes. Doorways in bays 2 and 5, doors have
lower panels of chamfered boards, upper glazing, 2x2 panes.
Roof concealed by parapet with moulded coping and string. 3
stacks with diagonal shafts, 4 in centre and 2 on outer pair.
N and S ends of block diagonally buttressed with finials. S
end elevation: decorated with ground and first floor blind
windows and upper recess. Gable parapet with string and
finials. Plaque between window recesses records construction
in 1840 by Gibsons. Rear, E elevation: full length C20 single
storey red brick lean-to addition with 2 gabled 2-storey
blocks equally spaced along run. Casement windows with glazing
bars. Back doors have recessed lower panels and 2x3 upper
glazing.
