House. Said to have been built c. 1500 by John Baldwin, C17 and later alterations
and additions. Limestone rubble with stone dressings, stone tiled roof with
raised coped verges and gable stacks with diagonal chimneys, addition to right
with slate roof. U-plan formed by 2 rear wings, symmetrical front. 2½ storeys
and 3 windows, ground floor has two 4-light casements with ovolo mullions, king
mullion and hood mould, first floor has 2 similar 3-light casements, central
2-storey gabled porch has 4-centred arched chamfered opening, small lancet to each
side, benches to sides, heavy ovolo-moulded frame with run-out stops to inner door,
plank and batten, studded, strap hinges with fleur-de-lys heads and iron ring
handle, porch has first floor similar 3-light casement; 3 small gables, each with
similar 2-light casement; all C20 glazing, some metal-framed lights. Attached
to right, a single storey wing has C20 window to left and garage door to right,
ridge stacks. Left return has blocked 3-light casement at ground floor, similar
single light at attic to right of stack; lower wing to left has similar 2-light
casement at ground and first floor. Right return has external stack, similar
single light at ground floor right; rear of single storey addition has 2 doors and
one window. Rear has 2 wings, to left with ground floor 3-light casement,
buttress blocking central light, 6-pane sash with dripstone at first floor and
single light at attic. Central 2 bays between wings have C20 door and greenhouse
filling central area, at first floor a single light with dripstone, 2-light
casement with chamfered mullion and dripstone (formerly 3-light, replaced) small
gable above as on front with 2-light casement with chamfered mullion and dripstone;
wing to right of 2 storeys. Interior: through passage, wings to rear probably
added later, former external wall about 2 feet thick; wide newel stair rising to
attic level; front left room has 4-centred arched stone fireplace, with moulded
jambs, head and mantel, formerly at first floor, heavy beam with run-out stops;
front right room has high cambered lintel to fireplace with possible smoking
chamber to left. First floor rear wing to right has stone bolection-moulded
fireplace; rear and centre attics have 4-centred arched chamfered door frames,
5-bay roof to front with principal rafters, collars, 2 rows of purlins and ridge
purlin.
