Farmhouse. Circa late C16 or early C17, possibly with earlier origins. Stone rubble
and cob. Slate roof with gable end on left, hipped end on right and gable end to
rear wing on right. Adjoining store on left hand gable end with hipped end and rear
right hand gable end continued with outbuildings which are not included. Lower rear
wing on left with scantle slate roof and gable end. Brick axial stack, originally
gable end stack heating left hand room, brick axial stack heating central room of
front range and brick front lateral stack on right. Brick stack on gable end of rear
right hand wing and projecting stone rubble side lateral stack heating rear left hand
wing.
Plan: The interior was remodelled in the C19 and C20 altering the plan and covering
any early features. Consequently the original arrangement is uncertain. The circa
late C16 front range has a three room and through passage plan with the left hand
room heated by a gable end stack, the central room probably the hall by an axial
stack and the inner room by a front lateral stack. The contemporary wing to the rear
of the right hand room was heated by a gable end stack. To the rear of the through
passage is a wing of one room plan, heated by a projecting side lateral stack. This
wing may be contemporary or even possibly earlier becoming a kitchen wing in the late
C16 or early C17. A stair projection, containing a C19 stair is positioned between
this kitchen wing and the rear right hand wing, to the rear of the hall.
Two storeys. Asymmetrical 1:3 window front. Store on left with C19 2-light
casement on ground floor and C20 window above. Main range with fenestration disposed
to left and front lateral chimney stack to right; C20 window on left, part glazed
door and C19 16-pane horned sash on right. First floor with two 16-pane hornless
sashes and horned 16-pane sash on right. Side elevation with two plank doors
flanking C19 16-pane hornless sash with three 16-pane sashes above and two rows of
pigeon holes below the eaves. Rear wing on left with remains of 2-light mullion
window in form of hall bay projection to left of side lateral stack.
Interior: Roof structure to main range of circa late C16; four raised cruck trusses,
morticed at apices carrying a diagonal set ridge. Collars with curved dovetailed and
notched lap-joints. Four trusses above contemporary rear right hand wing repaired in
circa mid C20. Roof structure above rear kitchen wing not accessible.
