School, now betting shop and restaurant. 1837. For Sir Robert Peel P.M. Brick with ashlar dressings, part painted; tile roof with brick end stack. L-plan. Single-storey with attic; 2-window range. Left half (No17) under gable; right end breaks forward, with gable over window. Coped gables, that to left with 3 pinnacles, 2 truncated. No 17 has C20 entrance with paired doors flanked by Tudor-headed entrances with label moulds and traceried spandrels, that to left blocked with Y-tracery window, that to right with plank door; entrance to right end (No 18) has rubbed brick cambered arch and 6-panel door. Window to ground floor of No 18 has weathered sill, and rubbed brick cambered arch over 4-pane horned tripartite sash; 1st floor has pointed window with intersecting tracery and hood to No 17, segmental-headed casement window with pegged frame to No 18. Rear has gabled wing with similar details and return gablet; C20 addition to end and C20 outshut to left. The school was founded by Sir Robert Peel's father, and was moved to this building by Sir Robert, who also built its replacement across the road (q.v.) in 1850.
