Nos.1 AND 2

GV II

Pair of small houses. c1830-40. Plastered stone rubble,
lightly blocked out as ashlar to front; end stacks with
plastered and exposed brick chimneyshafts and old pots; slate
roof.
PLAN: Mirror plan, each unit one room wide and 2 rooms deep.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic; symmetrical 3-window front.
Outer window bays recessed between full-height pilasters and
central bay which contains paired doorways (both now
containing recessed C20 doors) under blind windows. Outer
windows are 12-pane sashes. 2 gabled dormers are probably C19
but have new bargeboards and windows.
INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to be of interest.
The houses of Charles Street, which comprise a good group of
artisan housing, enclose the west side of the Market Square.
The whole area was developed in the 1820s and 1830s on land
reclaimed from the old tidal mill pool.
