Tower, remains of garden pavilion. c1909. By Belcher and Joass. Baroque Revival style. Limestone ashlar. Raised on a hexagonal platform up 2 steps. Hexagonal in plan, approx 2m in diameter. Approx 10m high, in 3 unequal stages: the first has a plain plinth and panelled sides with segmental pediments; the second has a recessed band and a prominent cornice; the third has concave sides alternately plain and swagged, with detached Ionic colonnettes at the corners, a very prominent cornice of matching section, and a domed cap. Originally the masonry core of a temple shelter, whose roof was supported by braces fixed to the central stage. HISTORY: the shelter formed part of the improvements to Williamson Park which Lord Ashton offered to pay for in 1904. (Ashworth S: The Lino King: York: 1989-).
