Description

SX 89 NW CREDITON HAMLETS

7/83 Meetford Cottage

II

House, formerly gamekeeper's cottage. Probably C18th, enlarged in C19. Plastered
cob on rubble footings including some C19 brickwork. Cob stack topped with C19
brick. Now a gable-ended 2-room lobby entrance house with central axial stack and
rear outshut. Faces south-west. 2-storeys. Irregular 3-window front and eaves
step down twice from left to right. Door left of centre with 1984 replacement,
gabled porch. Windows are casements of various size, irregular disposition and
different dates. The oldest is first floor right; a 3-light timber frame with
slender flat-faced mullions and small rectangular leaded panes with vertical iron
bars. Similar 2-light window in right end (south east) and a larger and possibly
later example in south-east side of outshot. Interior has plain carpentry detail
and in right room signs of demolished gun-room. House was originally a single room
cottage (the right room) and was extended to left and outshut added in C19.
