Description

LANSALLOS
SX 15 SE

3/16 Old Farmhouse 5m to south east of
West Kellow Farmhouse

II
Longhouse, now empty and used as a store. Probably C16 with floor inserted in hall
and roof timbers replaced in possibly early C18. However, it is possible that the
farmhouse was always floored and may date from the C17 and could be a fairly late
example of its type.
Stone rubble with cob above ground floor. Corrugated iron roof with higher gable end
(left) and lower hipped end (right). Projecting stone rubble chimney stack on higher
gable end and projecting front lateral stone rubble hall stack. The stack is much
overgrown and it is difficult to assess whether this has been added. Comprises hall,
inner room, through passage and shippon at lower end. The hall is heated by a front
lateral chimney stack and the inner, later parlour, by an end stack. A stone rubble
partition divides these 2 rooms up to first floor level. The higher end of the
through passage has a stone rubble wall up to first floor level with a stud partition
above. At the lower side of the passage a stone rubble wall has been inserted,
dividing the passage from the shippon. The shippon has a separate entrance on the
front elevation. Later lean-to outshuts at rear of hall.
2 storeys, asymmetrical front much overgrown. Wide hall window to left of hall
chimney stack. Morticed doorframe at entrance to through passage. Further entrance
to shippon to right with stone rubble wall between, projecting forward, possibly part
of an earlier lean-to porch. Slit ventilation opening in shippon to right and
another slit opening below eaves. Round corner at front lower end of shippon.
Interior Hall with slight chamfered ceiling beams. Ceiling beams to inner room
replaced in circa C20. Inner room (parlour) with probably C18 china cupboard. C19
chimney piece to earlier fireplace. Stone rubble partition between hall and inner
room with slightly cambered chamfered bressumer. The floor inside the shippon has
been possibly raised and covered in litter and therefore if the drain exists it is
concealed. There is no sign of a drain outlet hole in the end wall. Straight joints
in the lower wall of the shippon may also indicate rebuilding. Roof with 6 trusses
above hall and inner room and 4 above shippon. Circa C18 with principals halved and
lap-joined and pegged at apex and slight chambered collars lapped and pegged on to
the face of the principal.
West Kellow Farmhouse represents a rare surviving example in Cornwall of this build-
ing type.
