3/14 Higher Tregiddle Farmhouse and - building adjoining courtyard wall to east and garden wall to front II

Farmhouse and adjoining outbuilding and including garden walls to front (south west). C17, remodelled in the circa mid-late C18. Shale rubble walls, limewashed within rear courtyard, dressed granite C17 features of 3 doorways and 6 windows, dressed granite quoins, jambstones and lintels to parts rebuilt in the C18, incorporating many C17 chamfered stones. Hipped scantle slate roof with gable ended wing at rear left and pyramidal scantle roof over outbuilding. Ridges of main roof and hips have circa C17-C18 handmade crested clay ridge tiles. Brick chimneys over side walls and over gable end of rear wing. Plan of L-shape formed by rear left wing, plus small extension at rear right and square outbuilding joined by doorway to rear courtyard. In the C17 the house was probably larger but now comprises 2 large rooms to front with central passage leading to stair between; parlour to left of passage and larger hall/kitchen with C17 beams on right; and service wing at rear left with chamber over, now 2 rooms. 2 storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3-window south-west front. Doorway slightly left of middle with 4-panel door within large C20 glazed porch. First floor windows have slate-hung sill aprons forming hoods to granite lintel over ground floor windows. Windows are wide C18 horizontal sliding sashes with some of their original crown glass; meeting stiles are off centre to left with 6:9 panes to each window except 6:6 to square window over doorway. A further C18 3-light horizontal sliding sash survives to first floor of south east wall of wing. Rear north east wall has flat-headed chamfered granite doorway now leading into north corner of hall/kitchen but may mark the position of former through passage. A pentice roof supported on 3 granite monoliths, the middle one with 4 chamfered corners and one to right similar but shortened to plinth for iron stanchion, gives protection for access from back doorway to later cut doorway in angle of wing. This is probably a C18 compromise arrangement to avoid the parlour. There is another chamfered C17 doorway to middle of south east wall of wing and 2-light mullioned window (with mullion removed) to the right. A similar but complete 2-light window survives to the north west wall of the outbuilding. Further C17 features: chamfered doorway between rear right projection of house and outbuilding both probably resited; chamfered frame to left of this doorway; 2 single light chamfered granite windows to north west wall and to gable end of wing. Interior has mostly C18 carpentry and joinery features: 4-panel or ledged doors with HL-hinges, simple T-plan stair and large wooden surround to kitchen fireplace. The C17 ovolo-moulded beams with ogee tongue stops survive in the kitchen however. The chamber over the wing has curved plasterwork to the canopied ceiling. Roof structures not inspected but must be C18 or older. Garden wall to south west front are rubble with lower granite coped walls flanking central entrance gateway with square dressed granite monolith piers. This is a most interesting house deserving further more detailed study to try to resolve its plan development. Little altered since the C18 and retaining many complete C17 features.
