ST BURYAN PENBERTH COVE SW 42 SW 8/111 The Thatched Cottage - GV II House and adjoining cottage, now 1 house. C17 house, remodelled in the C18, extended in circa 1911. Granite rubble with granite dressings. Original house has dry slate roof and probably 018 dressed granite stack over left hand gable end. Later house has thatched half-hipped roof with original dressed granite stacks over either side wall. Plan: Overall rectangular plan. On the left is the original 2-room-plan house (originally with hall kitchen on the left and parlour on the right) with C18 or C19 single-storey outshut at rear. On the right is a deeper plan early C20 extension with reused material from demolished C17 house which was on the same site. Originally there were 2 rooms at the front (now all 1 room) flanking a central entrance hall leading to former stair hall between rear service rooms. Exterior: 2 storeys. Overall 5 window south west front. Original 2 window front on the left with central doorway. Circa early C20 door, 4-pane horned sashes on the left and 4-pane casements on the right. Probably C18 openings. There is a C17 chamfered window opening in the left hand end and another one at the rear. Unaltered C20 house is much taller and has a nearly symmetrical 3-window front with central chamfered doorway within original open-fronted thatched porch. 2-light mullioned windows to ground floor; 2 wide arched 3-light windows under thatch eyebrows at first floor left and right and small window between. Original door and casements with glazing bars. Some reused C17 masonry (probably from house that was demolished to built 1911 house). Interior has large C17 chamfered fireplace at left-hand end with right-hand jamb rebuilt and domed granite bread oven inserted in the C18. Other visible features are C19 or C20.
