4/171 Miners Arms Inn(formerly listed
7.1.77 as the Miners Arms Public House
and adjoining cottage on west side)
GV II
Public house. C17, extended circa early C18, date in plaster 1775, further extended
in the C19. Killas rubble, coursed killas, elvan, granite and brick dressings, some
slate hanging. Dry Delabole slate roofs with gable ends. Lateral brick stack at rear
towards right, C18 stone stack over gable end of front wing.
Plan: Irregular plan. Original long C17 2-room range extended in front of the
right-hand side, with a parlour wing at right angles circa early C18 and with a wing
built slightly forward on the right providing a stair hall and probably another
parlour. Later in the C18 or in the C19 a probable forge was built in front of the
parlour wing and in the C19 a wing was built on the left projecting at right angles
in front. There is said to be a tunnel leading between, the Miners Arms and The Old
Manor House (qv) across the road.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Largely unaltered since the C19. Front has C19 gable-end
built forward on the left, part of original front on its right; former forge, right
of middle, built forward of projecting parlour wing and on the right a circa early
C18 front with a moulded and modillioned wooden eaves cornice. Mostly circa late C19
or C20 horned sashes in C18 or C19 openings. Left-hand wall of parlour wing has good
C18 masonry with ground floor window spanned by shallow dressed stone arch. Blocked
stair window above and to its left. In the opposite wall of the parlour wing is one
original C18 6-paned light with wide glazing bars.
Interior: C17 chamfered hardwood ceiling beams with ogee stops, in earlier part.
Enormous fireplace on the left removed in the C20. Small fireplace under later stack
at rear of right-hand part. Many good quality C18 features in C18 part of the
building including: patterned plaster ceiling with moulded ribs, (2 concentric ovals
with a diamond shape at the centre and a large moulded cornice) dado panelling, a
corner cupboard (niche) with shaped shelves moulded doorframes; a 2-panel door in the
parlour; a moulded plaster ceiling cornice in the passage behind the parlour a
ceiling, with dentilled cornice and Arabesques, dated 1775, much fielded panelling,
and dog-leg stair with turned balusters, in the stair hall. Possibly there are other
interesting features in parts of the building not inspected.
