Boundary wall, at left of main entrance to Cleveland Salt Company, c.1887,
now at entrance to construction yard of Davy Offshore Modules Ltd. Brick in
English bond with stone dressings. Screen wall, 4.5m high at right end,
rising to 9m at left end; 1 + 5 + 4 + 4 bays. Shallow-gabled left end bay
has 3 blind round-headed doorways, the middle taller, in flat brick
surrounds with rounded arrises. Central oculus, in similar surround, above.
Pilaster strips with rounded angles at ends, topped with slightly-projecting
pedestals with gabled caps. Gable has 13 recessed panels and chamfered
copings. Right 5 bays have large elliptical-headed-and-based openings in
similar surrounds, holding iron grilles. Similar pilaster strips right of
3rd and 6th bays, the latter topped with similar pedestal. Stone-capped
chamfered plinths and parapet with flat copings. Right 4 lower bays, with
similar treatment, openings smaller. Lower 4 right end bays have large
recessed panels with dogtooth head, parapet with chamfered copings, ramped
at ends, similar pedestal topping pilaster strip at right, and plinth.
Later 1.8m high, short restraining walls adjoin rear at right-angles between
bays. Short altered right end section of wall is not. of special interest.
