GV II
Bridge. Probably late C18 for William Aislabie. Gritstone rubble and
boulders, with tufa blocks. Single span shallow segmental arch with dressed
rubble voussoirs and keystones. Large worn boulders as terminals, rubble
crest to parapet. The stones are mortared but carefully built up to give
the appearance of dry walling. The bridge carries a narrow bridle or
pedestrian pathway and replaced a timber structure of c1740 built in Chinese
style (W T C Walker, personal communication). The route led to the pagoda
(1744-45) built above the Chinese Wood further east (demolished).
