Stable block for Greystoke Castle. Late C18 or early C19. Pink sandstone
ashlar walls with string course, eaves modillions and raised quoins. Graduated
hipped greenslate roof. Rear catslide roof of Welsh slate. Recessed 2 storeys,
5 bays, with flanking projections of 2 bays, the left return wall of 3 bays and
the right return wall of 5 bays, forming a rough H-shape. Central Tudor-Gothic
doorway and windows, some with glazing bars. The projections have similar
doorways, partly blocked, and similar upper-floor windows, between which are
3 large incised H's (Howard). Return walls have similar windows and doorways,
the left wall with pointed-arched windows. A drawing of 1825 by Sir George
Pococke, shows the rear of this building in a distant view of the castle.
