ST 01 SW SAMPFORD PEVERELL HIGHER TOWN Samford Peverell 8/149 Nos. 6, 10 and 12 GV II Row of 3 cottages. Late C16/C17 house, subdivided into 3 cottages in C19. Plastered local stone rubble, maybe with some cob; stone rubble stacks with plastered brick chimneyshafts; slate roof, formerly thatch. Plan: row of three 1-room cottages facing north. No 6 is the left (east) end cottage, No 10 is in the centre and No 12 is the right (west) end cottage. There is a gable-ended stack heating No 6 and Nos 10 and 12 have an axial stack in the pantry wall between them serving back-to-back fireplaces. There is a passage through the building between Nos 6 and 10. Originally a 3-room plan with axial stack shared between higher end (No 12) and central hall (No 10), and heated lower end beyond through passage to left (No 6). 2 storeys with secondary outshuts and service wings to rear. Exterior: overall irregular 5-window front of various late C19 and early C20 sashes, some are horned 4-pane sashes and others are 10-pane (8/2) sashes. Nos 10 and 12 have front doorways containing C20 doors and No 6 has a doorway off the passage (also containing a C20 door). The roof is gable-ended. Interior: boxed beam to No 12; moulded beams from originally quartered ceiling to No 10; chamfered beam and chamfered bressummer to open fireplace in No 6. First floor and roof remodelled C19 and C20.

Plastered local stone rubble, maybe with some cob; stone rubble stacks with plastered brick chimneyshafts; slate roof, formerly thatch. Plan: row of three 1-room plan cottages facing north. No 6 is the left (east) end cottage, No 10 is in the centre and No 12 is the right(west) end cottage. There is a gable-end stack heating No 6 and Nos 10 and 12 have an axial stack in the pantry wall between them serving back-to-back fireplaces. There is a passage through the building between Nos 6 and 10. Since no internal inspection was available at the time of this survey it is not possible to outline the historic development of this building in detail. It maybe that it was built as a row of small cottages or that the cottages were made in the C19 by subdividing a C17 house. 2 storeys with secondary outshots and service wings to rear. Exterior: overall irregular 5-window front of various late C19 and early C20 sashes, some are horned 4-pane sashes and others are 10-pane (8/2) sashes. Nos 10 and 12 have front doorways containing C20 doors and No 6 has a doorway off the passage (also containing a C20 door). The roof is gable-ended. Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey although some presumably C17 beams with neat chamfers were seen in the ground floor rooms. Otherwise it seems that most of the joinery detail is C19 and C20.
