SS 21 SE KILKHAMPTON KILKHAMPTON

4/19 Churchyard gate about 18 metres
- east of the Church of
St James
- II

Gate and gate piers. Mid C19. Single leaf pedestrian wrought iron gate of 8
uprights equally spaced between a perimeter frame with a middle rail. Top rail
bowed with 9 spike finials. 2 semicircular hoops join at the middle rail. Three-
quarter length intermediate verticals with spear finials. Gate piers of square
section are coped with ovolo-moulded stones said to have come from Stowe, built
1679, demolished 1739. In 1739 the Kilkhampton Churchwardens purchased 36 feet of
coping stone at 6d per foot from Stowe. Michael Trinick, 'The Great House of
