Description

SW 72 NE MANACCAN

2/48 Golden Gear and Kennel Cottages
-

GV II

House, used from 1780 as customs house, now house and adjoining former sail loft,
which has been converted to 2 cottages. C18 and circa early-mid C19. Shale rubble,
the C18 part rendered to front, granite sills and some jambstones. Shallow brick
arches to former sail loft. Scantle slate roofs, hipped over C18 part, with C18
hand-made crested clay ridge tiles. 2 brick axial chimneys over cottages and brick
lateral chimney over left-hand side of C18 front.
Overall L-shaped plan. Probably originally a two room plan with central passage and
stair. At the, rear of the stair is a 2 storey projection with original barred look
out window to 1st floor, probably added circa 1780 when the house was adapted for use
as a customs house. In the C19 a sail loft was built at right angles in front of the
right hand side of the house and the sail loft was converted into 2 cottages and the
left hand room of the original house was divided by an axial partition.
2 storeys. Irregular south-west C18 1-window front with former sail loft projecting
forwards from right. Doorway near angle with panelled door. Window slightly left of
doorway and first floor window midway between 2-light casement. Cottages have 3-
window north-west front with entrances at rear. Ground floor left and first floor
left, adjoining angle, and the middle first floor window are original 12-pane 2-light
horizontal sliding sashes.
Interior of house (Golden Gear) has C18 straight flight stair and 2-panel door
under; otherwise C19 features but the floor and roof structures are probably C18.
Sited in an unspoiled stretch of the Helford River.
